Best Movie Dance Scenes

Best movie dance scenes

Hollywood has given us so many memorable waltzing, pirouetting and break-dancing numbers. Here's a roundup of some of our favorites -- including some by twinkle-toed legends and stars who are surprisingly spry.
'Swing Time'
This 1936 musical stars the most famous dancing duo of all time. The film features plenty of old Hollywood splendor, but few scenes captivate like this unassuming little number.
'Singin' in the Rain'
Both the title track and its accompanying dance scene -- starring these famed feet -- have become a part of movie history.
'West Side Story'
This stage-to-screen musical adaptation draws you in from the very beginning. The dancing delinquents are simultaneously gritty and graceful.
'Mary Poppins'
One of the best scenes from this 1964 children's classic isn't about its title character at all. A comedy vet helms a lively dance crew that parties on the London rooftops.
'Saturday Night Fever'
The 1977 disco extravaganza was filled with hits and "The Hustle." One scene stands out, with all eyes on the film's budding star.
'Flashdance'
In 1983, a fledgling actress proved a drab gray sweatshirt could have serious sex appeal.
'Breakin''
It's best not to think about the acting or the plot of this 1984 release. Just admire it for helping to bring popping and locking to the mainstream.
'Footloose'
A town where dancing is forbidden? Not if a big-city newcomer has anything to say about it.
'Ferris Bueller's Day Off'
This 1986 comedy followed the exploits of a popular puckish teen. And while music was mainly kept in the background, throngs of city dwellers broke into dancing mid-movie.
'Dirty Dancing'
The ugly duckling-turned-swan story captured our hearts back in the late '80s, thanks to a young actress, a muscled hunk and a soft rock hit.
'Do the Right Thing'
Anyone who's seen this gripping drama knows it's not a musical like the others. All the same, the opening credits feature an unforgettable one-woman performance.
'You Got Served'
An R&B singer leads this cast of gravity-defying street dancers. The film features plenty of impressive break-dancing one-upmanship, culminating in one last battle.
'(500) Days of Summer'
In the midst of this quirky deconstructed love story, the male lead is so smitten that he breaks into an unexpected dance number, drawing workaday commuters out of their doldrums.

Jon Bon Jovi accused Apple co-founder, Steve Jobs for "killing" the music industry with iTunes.
Jon Bon Jovi is unhappy as children has stopped enjoying the experience of buying records from the high streets due to easy availability by downloading songs on ipod.

He told to the Sunday Times Magazine, "Kids today have missed the whole experience of putting the headphones on, turning it up to 10, holding the jacket, closing their eyes and getting lost in an album; and the beauty of taking your allowance money and making a decision based on the jacket, not knowing what the record sounded like, and looking at a couple of still pictures and imagining it."

"God, it was a magical, magical time. I hate to sound like an old man now, but I am, and you mark my words, in a generation from now people are going to say: 'What happened?'. Steve Jobs is personally responsible for killing the music business."

Oklahoma Mother gets 10 years and $31 marijuana sale

An Oklahoma woman has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for selling $31 of marijuana.

Patricia Marilyn Spottedcrow, a 25-year-old mother of four, and her mother, Delita Starr, 50, sold an $11 dime bag to a police informant in Oklahoma on Dec. 31, 2009. The informant returned two weeks later to buy $20 of marijuana. Spottedcrow, who worked in nursing homes before her arrest, told The Oklahoman she did it to get some extra money.

The women were charged with drug distribution and possession of a dangerous substance in the presence of a minor, because Spottedcrow's children were in the house during the transaction. They were offered plea deals of two years in prison but decided to enter a guilty plea instead, a gamble they took because neither had prior convictions and because the amount of drugs sold was so small.

The gamble did not pay off. Spottedcrow was given sentences of 10 years in prison for distribution and two years for possession, to run concurrently. When she was picked up to be taken to prison, she had marijuana in her jacket pocket, which led to another two-year concurrent sentence and a fine of nearly $1,300.

Starr received a suspended sentence of 30 years with no incarceration and five years of drug and alcohol assessments.

Spottedcrow began her sentence at Eddie Warrior Correctional Center three days before Christmas.

Lindsay Lohan due back in court twice

LOS ANGELES - Lindsay Lohan was expected to appear in court Wednesday, where a judge could decide whether an allegation that the actress stole a $2,500 necklace can be resolved without going to trial.
The "Mean Girls" star has pleaded not guilty to a count of felony grand theft over the necklace, which was taken an upscale jewelry store in the beachside community of Venice.
During her arraignment Feb. 9, Lohan's attorney indicated the actress may be willing to take a plea deal if the terms are right.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Keith Schwartz was expected to get reports on Lohan's probation and decide whether the case can be resolved before trial. He has indicated that he thinks Lohan violated her probation on a 2007 drunken driving case, but has not indicated how he will handle the matter.
He also has threatened to jail the actress if she encountered any other problems.
"Everybody else has to follow the law," Schwartz told Lohan this month. "You're no different than anyone else. So please, don't push your luck."
The necklace case has become the latest courthouse issue for Lohan, who was sent to jail twice and rehab twice last year for violating her probation.
She spent three months in rehab at the Betty Ford Center and was accused by a rehab worker there of misdemeanor battery during a December argument. Prosecutors in Riverside County have not yet decided whether to pursue charges in that case.
Roughly three weeks after her release, Lohan was accused of taking the necklace from Kamofie & Co., a jewelry store near Lohan's new home in Venice. The necklace was turned over to detectives before they could serve a warrant to search Lohan's home.
Her career has been stalled for months, with Lohan losing her part in a biopic of porn star Linda Lovelace while she was receiving treatment at Betty Ford.
Lohan's attorney, Shawn Holley, has denied the actress stole the necklace and said that the 24-year-old has passed all drug testing.

HarryReid to ban brothels in Nevada

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) – Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Tuesday urged lawmakers from his home state of Nevada to make prostitution illegal, a move that would turn back decades of cultural and legal history.
"The time has come for us to outlaw prostitution," Reid said during remarks at the opening of Nevada's bi-annual legislative session.
Though Reid's comments occupied only a few paragraphs in an eight-page speech, they caused an immediate stir in Nevada, the only U.S. state where prostitution is legal.
Nevada allows legal brothels in counties with populations of less than 400,000, which doesn't include Clark County or Las Vegas. The state has been home to legal brothels since the early 70s, currently numbering two dozen.
"Nevada needs to be known as the first place for innovation and investment - not as the last place where prostitution is still legal," Reid said, adding that his concern about the issue was prompted by a visit by an technology firm to rural Storey County.
The company was considering locating its business there, Reid said, but one of the businessmen "simply couldn't believe that one of the biggest businesses in the county he was considering for his new home is legal prostitution."
At stake, Reid said, are "desperately-needed jobs" in a state that leads the nation in unemployment, foreclosure and bankruptcy rates.
"When the nation thinks about Nevada, it should think about the world's newest ideas and newest careers - not about its oldest profession," he said.
George Flint, representing the Nevada Brothel Owners Association, was in attendance during the speech, along with three brothel owners and 10 prostitutes.
Flint said he's only heard of one business in 25 years that cited legalized prostitution as a concern when considering locating to Nevada.
Pete Goicoechea, a rancher and Nevada Assembly Minority Leader, said legalized prostitution "pales in the face of the real issues facing the state."
Goicoechea represents portions of eight rural counties that are home to at least eight legal brothels. He has "never heard of companies having concerns" about the issue.
Not only that, he added, legal prostitutes "do provide a service. Anytime you have young working unmarried people, like in mining, it's a benefit."

Dianna Agron terrified

Dianna Agron is “terrified” of Alex Pettyfer

Glee's Dianna Agron didn't exactly sing a wistful ballad following her split from actor Alex Pettyfer after nearly a year together.
Since moving out of the L.A. home she and the I Am Number Four star shared about two weeks ago, Agron, 24, "is staying at a hotel under an alias" a source reveals in the new Us Weekly, out Wednesday.
Why the secrecy? Pettyfer, 20, has been "a psycho loose cannon" in the aftermath of the split, another insider says.
On Feb. 18, according to an eyewitness, he got into a heated confrontation at a West Hollywood club with actor Sebastian Stan -- furiously accusing the Black Swan star of hooking up with Agron.
"Dianna is terrified of [Alex]," a pal explains, adding that he "absolutely lost it" and threatened Agron during a vicious phone chat. (Pettyfer's rep tells Us he made no threats.)

Unknown box office

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Liam Neeson gave British heartthrob Alex Pettyfer a run for his money, with the veteran actor's thriller "Unknown" taking the top spot at the North American box office this holiday weekend.

"Unknown" earned $21.8 million for the weekend leading up to the Presidents Day holiday on Monday, following in the footsteps of Neeson's last action hit, 2009's "Taken."

Leeson stars as a botanist who awakens after a car crash in Berlin to find his wife claiming she does not known him and that another man has taken his identity.

Sci-fi action flick "I Am Number Four," was in second place with Alex Pettyfer as a teenaged alien refugee hiding on Earth from evil invaders who killed his family. Critics had expected it to come in first, but the film netted just $19.5 million in ticket receipts despite the anticipation.

The animated "Gnomeo and Juliet" held on to third place, with $19.4 million. The family-friendly Shakespeare retelling features the voices of James McAvoy and Emily Blunt, as well as the music of Elton John.

In the fourth spot was last week's winner, "Just Go With It" starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. The romantic comedy cashed $18.2 million.

The weekend's other major new release -- Martin Lawrence's "Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son" comedy -- came in fifth with $17 million.

In sixth was Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never," with $13.6 million. The concert documentary tells the story of the boy's rise from a small town in Canada to superstardom -- and he doesn't turn 17 until next month.

Still basking in its awards glory ahead of the Academy Awards next week, critically acclaimed "The King's Speech" took $6.6 million in the seventh spot, bringing its 13-week total to $103.3 million.

The British historical drama has been nominated for 12 Oscars and already scooped up wins at other award ceremonies in the United States and Europe.

Dropping into eighth was widely panned horror flick "The Roommate" with $4.1 million, ahead of gladiator pic "The Eagle" starring Channing Tatum and earning $3.6 million.

Rounding out the top 10 was "No Strings Attached," a romantic romp starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher. The Ivan Reitman film about casual sex between friends took in $3.1 million.

Artificial blood vessels

Lightning helps create artificial blood vessels
Lightning bolts could help create artificial organs, according to new research by scientists at Texas A&M University.
An electrically charged block of plastic gives way to a series of tunnel-carving lightning bolts when a nail is driven into it. Adding human blood vessel cells to the tunnels could create a template upon which an artificial organ could grow.

"One of the biggest problems in tissue engineering is how to create a vascular network to feed the growing tissue," said Arul Jayaraman, a professor at Texas A&M who, along with his colleague Victor Ugaz, co-authored the study that appears in the journal Advanced Materials. "The structure of these networks closely resembles the human vasculature."
The artificial organs begin as clear blocks of biodegradable plastic about the size of an inch-thick stack of Post-It notes. An electron beam fills the block with electricity, then the scientists drive nails into either end of the plastic block.
With each strike of the hammer, lightning streaks through the block and exits through the nail, leaving tiny tunnels in its wake. "It's pretty spectacular," said Jayaraman. "It looks just like lightning bolts."
These tunnels are remarkably similar to the capillary system inside the human body. At their largest size, where the nails are driven in, the lightning induced tunnels are about the same size as veins and arteries. In the middle of the block, the tunnels are smaller, about the same size as capillaries.
The tunnels also connect with each other; fluid that goes in one side comes out the other. The streaking of the lightning might seem random, but it penetrates all areas of the block, ensuring an adequate blood supply to the entire organ.
The entire process takes only a few seconds. That's much faster and cheaper than previous efforts to create 3D artificial channels, said the researchers.
Traditionally, scientists create 3D channels in plastic using the same techniques used to produce computer chips, a technique known as photolithography.
A metal mask is place over a flat surface and the pores or channel are created by shining light onto the open areas. The flat layers would then have to be assembled one on top of another to create a 3D structure. The process is expensive and time-consuming.
"You have to build it one layer at a time," said James Landers, a scientist at the University of Virginia who builds 2D channels for sensing applications. "If they can get lots of pores in a 3D block by simply applying a voltage, that would be very interesting."
One big difference of the new technique is that the channels inside each plastic block are unique. The channels created by photolithography are almost completely identical.
Creating an identical vascular system for a kidney, for example, might not be necessary, said Landers.
Rosemarie Hunziker of the National Institutes of Health agrees. As long as all parts of the artificial organ are close enough to receive nutrients and eliminate waste, they don't need to be identical.
"If you took kidneys from five different people and sliced them open, you would not see the exact same vascular pattern, at the microscopic level," said Hunziker, "even though the overall structure would be the same."
Creating a block of what resembles frozen lightning is only a first step to growing new organs.
With a blood system, scientists can now work to implant cells that will become the actual blood vessels. Then the cells that would become the actual liver, kidney or heart would have to be implanted. As the cells grow, the plastic would harmlessly degrade, until only the organ remained.
It will likely be years before such an organ is implanted into animals, let alone humans, caution the scientists.
"This is very nice, very innovative work, but also very early stage work," said Hunziker. "Evolution produced this vascular system that we have for a reason. And what (the researchers) can do is not only create this vascular network that resembles natural morphology, they can do it in a way that is rapid and reproducible."

Egypt's president deputy

The last time Egypt had a vice president was in 1981. His name was Hosni Mubarak.

His 30-year regime now facing intense pressure, Mubarak announced Saturday that the Arab world's most populous nation would once again have a deputy leader. For that role, he tapped Omar Suleiman, the intelligence chief who has been a powerful behind-the-scenes player for a long time.

Suleiman's appointment as vice president was seen widely as an attempt by Mubarak to restore order. He is well respected by the military and is credited with crushing an Islamic insurgency in the 1990s, for which he earned the ear of Western intelligence officials thirsting for vital information about regional terrorist groups.

He has also long been mentioned as a possible successor to Mubarak, along with the aging ruler's son, Gamal, and some analysts viewed his deputy appointment as a way for Mubarak to make a graceful exit.

"His loyalty to Mubarak seems rock solid," a former U.S. ambassador wrote in a classified U.S. diplomatic cable leaked to the website WikiLeaks.

"Suleiman himself adamantly denies any personal ambitions, but his interest and dedication to national service is obvious," said the 2007 document.

If Suleiman's name is not well known, it is intentional. As head of the Egyptian General Intelligence Organisation, known as the Mukhabarat, he has lurked in the shadows of Mubarak's regime, earning him a nickname of "the secret minister."

He has even made trips to Washington without public notice. On one such visit in 2006, he presented former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice with a personalized silver box worth $420.

"He is someone that we know well and have worked closely with," said State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley.

But if Suleiman's presence has been opaque, his role certainly has not.

Suleiman is even credited with saving Mubarak's life. On a state visit to Ethiopia in 1995, Mubarak was to have traveled in a normal vehicle but Suleiman insisted that the president's armored Mercedes be flown in from Cairo.

Accounts of an assassination attempt on Mubarak vary but it's believed that Suleiman was sitting next to Mubarak when a hail of bullets pinged off the car. The bond forged that day cemented their relationship.

Born in an impoverished area of southern Egypt in 1935, Suleiman chose the military as a career, according to a Foreign Policy magazine biography.

He rose through the ranks of the Egyptian infantry to a lieutenant general. After his country allied itself with the United States, he attended the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare School and Center at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in the 1980s, Foreign Policy reported.

He was tapped for Egypt's top intelligence post in 1993, at a time when the Arab world's most populous nation was wracked with terrorist attacks targeting tourists and essential infrastructure.

Defense and security analysis company IHS Jane's says Suleiman's interaction with the Israeli Mossad as well as the Central Intelligence Agency catapulted him to a central role in Egypt's security apparatus.

In 2001, he led Egyptian efforts to confront a Palestinian uprising next door. Later, he played a crucial role in the formation of a new Palestinian government headed by Mahmoud Abbas, according to Jane's.

Now, Omar Suleiman's name is etched into the annals of Egyptian history as the man entrusted to defend an embattled leader. He saved Mubarak's life before, but will he be able to preserve his power?

On 'SNL,' Nicki Minaj Is Crazy About 'The Creep'

Nicki Minaj SNL 'Creep' performance plays bride of Blackenstein. Nicki Minaj has officially made it to the SNL big time with 'Creep' performance. The recording artist scored with fans and regulars on the NBC late show.

Minaj showcased her acting chops before spitting choice lines from several 'Pink Friday' hits. Before the show was underway, she joined comedy trio The Lonely Island in a hilarious 'SNL Digital Short.' Playing the role of a geeky school girl named Point Dexter, the rapper took part demonstrating what 'The Creep' is all about.
The rapper stalks boys in a locker room to get a peek of their bodies and even shows up at a wake, raps, "When I was a girl, I'd creep in the boys locker room/ Hide deep inside, it was my little creep stalker room/ As they disrobed, I was oogling and ogling/ Little did they know that for me they were modeling," over a haunting melody. Later in the sketch comedy show, she also snagged a scene with host Jesse Eisenberg and cast members Kenan Thompson and Jay Pharoah.
Dressed in a towering black wig, Minaj plays the bride of Blackenstein in a parody of Blaxploitation and horror films. The MC even displays a rather profound posterior. Getting back to her roots, the Queens native, still showing off her Frankenstein-like wig, commanded the stage and performed favorites 'Moment 4 Life' and 'Right Thru Me' for the audience.
